The county's towns are packed with history with castles and monastic sites scattered throughout its landscape. Clonmacnoise with its round tower, ruins and Irish high cross is a former monastery founded in the 6th century by St Ciaran. Also of interest is the Demesne Castle in Birr, which is a great example of a fortress from the 17th century. Tullamore is the largest town in County Offaly and is home to Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey.
The county is well known for its outdoor activities including hillwalking in the Slieve Bloom Mountains and fishing, boating and angling along the River Shannon which flows through the west of the county.
